Topic : Creative Multimedia is the Heart of Design

1st task : ESSAY

Creative Multimedia is the heart of the design. This title somehow will make the readers especially one who does not have any basic knowledge about multimedia feel bewildered and even mystified in understanding what the topic is all about. Plenty of questions may be arisen from this title. What is creative? What is multimedia? What is creative multimedia? What is design? I will give thorough explanations for all these questions in order to enhance your understanding and to avoid confusion.

The first question that needs to be asked is, what is design? There is no generally-accepted definition of “design” exists, and the term has different connotations in different fields however, a design informally refers to a plan for the construction of an object as in architectural blueprints, circuit diagrams and sewing patterns. Carnegie Mellon University School of Design Professor Dick Buchanan has once stated that:

"Design is the human power to conceive, plan, and realize products that serve human beings in the accomplishment of any individual or collective purpose."

Besides that, another definition of design aired by designer Richard Seymour during the Design Council's Design in Business Week 2002 is 'making things better for people' which emphasizes design activity that focuses first and foremost on human behaviour and quality of life, not factors like distributor preferences. I am agree with Seymour’s statement of design which is quite true in certain circumstances because all in all, design is actually created for the betterment of human beings. It is ‘making things better for people’ however; design itself does not contribute to make things better for people as it also depends on its features. Design is everywhere. That is why sometimes searching for a definition may not help grasping what it is. It is what drew you to the last piece of ornament you bought and it is what made online shopping possible. It has made a trip to Kuala Lumpur easier by using KL Monorel and it has turned Jimmy Choo's name into what he is now- a well known shoe designer. It all happens because of design.

What comes to mind when you think of creativity? Obviously some of the characteristics of creative person are person who is optimistic, imaginative, inventive, adventurous, taking risks and perseverance. Do you think about originality and the value of what people produce? Perhaps you think you can only be creative if you are artistic. According to Franken (1994), creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others. Creativity and design works simultaneously. In order to have an exceptional design, one needs to have a high level of creativity. It cannot be separated with each other or else the result will be dull and tedious. In addition, creativity can be simply defined as the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then producing. Meanwhile, innovation is the production or implementation of an idea. If you have ideas, but do not act on them, you are imaginative but not creative.

Another question to ask is “what is multimedia?” Multimedia is simply multiple forms of media which are integrated together. Media can be text, graphics, still images, audio, animation, video, data, and so on. A very simple example of multimedia can be seen in a presentation using Microsoft Power Point by a student. In the presentation, the students presented his or her content with text and a related video to improve the listeners’ understanding of the topic presented. The combination of text and video in the presentation is an example of multimedia.

The term ‘creative’ and ‘multimedia’ are usually compounded together which creates a new word- creative multimedia. With the convergence of electronics, computing, and telecommunications, the demand in creative multimedia is escalating rapidly. Simply put, creative multimedia is forms of media which are interpreted and integrated creatively. Forms of media like animation, video and even pictures need to be injected with creativity to make things lively and vivacious. In this case, brilliant and extraordinary ideas are important to make those things come alive. Multimedia has become a huge force in American culture, industry and education. Practically any type of information that is received can be categorized as multimedia, from television, to magazines, to web pages, to movies. Multimedia is a tremendous force in both informing the public and entertaining us.

Back to the title of this essay which is ‘creative multimedia is the heart of the design’; it is absolutely true to its meaning. Creative multimedia and design solely depend with each other. They need each other in order to stay put in the market. Advertising is perhaps one of the biggest industries that use multimedia to send their message to the receiver. Radio or television is the medium of advertising which is a great way to promote an item and can significantly make the item is received by the masses with greater results. A plain, dull poster design will not be able to attract lots of audience therefore, the need of creative design is vital in delivering multimedia message with the goal of attracting numerous attention. Even a simple poster needs creativity to deliver the message for example using colourful, vibrant pictures and font so that the reader will be easily attracted to the advertisement.

Another example of creative multimedia can be seen in animation. Animation is a visual technique that provides the illusion of motion by displaying a collection of images in rapid sequence. It is mostly associated with the work of film makers. Illustrators create action from a series of images and we have the illusion of something that comes alive. Again even in animation, design and creativity play an important role to create a fine masterpiece. Whether it is a computer animation or a traditional animation; or whether it is a 2D animation or 3D animation; those are all important markers in establishing an animation. Examples of excellent animation are The Lion King, Cinderella, Ice Age, Kungfu Panda, Despicable Me, Shrek, Finding Nemo, and countless other animation which are all depend on design. Thus, creative multimedia is the heart of the design.

So my final conclusion is, creative multimedia is the heart of design. Without the design, creative multimedia would be nothing special so it is important for creative multimedia to focus on its design.

It is ergonomic as well. Comfortable to hold and of course lighter. You can keep it in your pencil box or any container. Anywhere you want to place it, even on the plate. Totally useful, practical, simple, unique and not so expensive. This is one of a kind innovation. :)

CREATIVE ENOUGH? MORE THAN THAT!

Description: This is a tube like item full of butter. It is really amazing! Opinion: I think this is a really cool invention! It is much easier than going to the fridge and getting out the butter. Then going to get the knife just to spread all over the bread. Improvements: I think an improvement could be what is inside it! I mean like why not have a chocolate filled tube? That would be much better than butter! You can take it anywhere much easier than carrying a choc bar around and it wont melt no matter how much you hold it.

This butter stick were invented by the japanese. Yes, it makes things easier to paste butter on the bread. Personally, it is really handy and useful. Practical, simple and unique. Derived from the glue stick idea. Yes, this invention is great. I have no other comment than just giving this invention a 10 stars. :)

In Japan they have a word for absurd inventions. The phrase was invented by a chap called Kenji Kawakami and normally applies to items for daily use like the Baby Mop. If you think being a baby is only bring difficulty to others, why not using this baby mop and help your mom to clean the floor? This is one of the japanese invention called the baby mop. While the baby play around on the floor, they help their mother to clean the floor. But this maybe makes you being caught and jailed as it looks like not a moral thing to do to your baby. However, i personally think this invention is very creative and unique. I have never thought of something like this could be invented but it is existed in this world. :D

The juxtapositon. Weird, but that's how we derived a new ideas by placing two words together and change everything about it by a few methods that's so interesting.

It could be defined as:

Juxtaposition can be defined as placing two variable, side by side and their contrast or similarity are shown through comparison. Many creative processes rely on juxtaposition. By juxtaposing two objects or words next to each other, human brain will automatically associate or transfer meaning. Usually ‘turning’ something familiar to something less familiar or vice-versa.

Up there is the exercise in our class about juxtaposition. The exercise were so much fun and it is almost like we have no class at all.

1) We have to copy all the words shown in the slide and make it into 2 columns.

2) Put numbers to each words

3) Think 3 sets of 2 numbers between 0 to 99

4) Pair each words in the column according to the number that we've chose

5) Make a sentence according to the words that we have paired.

6) Visualize the sentence in our own drawing

7) Make the words that we have paired to become one word.

8) Draw something new according to that new word!

And thats how we had so much fun!

Another exercise that we have done was about create a poem according to the words that the lecturer gave to us. In the class, he gave us the word "chilli" and he asked us to create a romantic poem based on that words.

So, i used the creative method thinking that is "mind mapping" and got this ideas!

*yes the handwriting are a bit off... i was in a hurry!*

And from that mind map, i easily get this poem for my lover by describing him symbolically by using the chilli~

And that's it. enough for now! :)

Part 6: Associated mind map

Associated mind map. Definitely a new different way of creating new idea and a new thing. To make an associated mind map, think of a word as the title and expand it with another words that got nothing to do with it. Just write what appears in your mind and that's how you get an associated mind map.

That's the exercise in our class regarding to the associated mind map. We have to choose 3 words from the associated mind map *which we still don't have it in the mmls, that's why i cant upload the picture of that mind map and put it here* and we have to creatively change the function of the mortar and pestle fir the future according to the words that we have chose.

In the mind map;

1) The mortar and pestle can be used as a "weapon". They can be used to shoot people, hit people and the best of all, zoom in to people! what a great and dangerous weapon. :p

2) The mortar and pestle also can also become a tool to worship the "devil".... who knows this thing could happen right? this is the future that we cant see as nowadays mortar and pestle were used to make sambal belacan... :D

3) The mortar and pestle are the symbol of beauty in the future. When a girl wins a beauty paegant, the mortar and peslte will be used as the crown to pronounce that she is "beautiful"~! *I personally think this is as a joke but who knows? maybe in the future... that's what happen in the beauty field... :p*

Creative enough.. it was cute, catchy, and i understand the connection between the whole thing in the video with the lyrics. It is totally random but still interesting and unique. That's why i call it creative.

I believe the video designer applying the surrealism art style to the video.

Reflection : The mind map method is very useful. While im doing this mind map i found out that i have many qualities that i have never listed before. Mind map is easily to understand. Part 4: Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention

TO THE INFINITY, AND BEYOND!!!!

In the Week 3rd class, we were talking about novelty, creativity, innovation and invention. I was again, being exposed to another different world where i have not able to break through to it before. However, so far.. i do understand that a CREATIVE person, generates new ideas. They are the problem solver, where they think of some global issues or problems and they are able to create a new inventions to solve the problems. They are the producer. Their ideas help others.

Production on the other hand, must have values and it supposed to be unique. Pixar are the first one who produce 3D animation that is the Toy Story 1 and before that, no one have ever valued 3D animation. No one have ever think about to create a 3D animation until Pixar succeed to make it. And so do like the rap music, where now it is becoming most of the global music.

Creativity, is a process of generating new ideas and new things. It is not happening only in people's head but it is the formation and interaction between many people. It involves the audiences and the person who had the idea. The Rome wasnt built in one day... that's how we can say about creative stuffs. Being creative is such a subjective matters and not everyone can really become one. Some people do have the idea but they cant think out of the box. Hey, creativity involve many processes, where many ideas are combined and become one. in the process, peoples got involve within the interactions and communications. They give options, responses, ideas, and appreciation. It is important to grab the key of creativity process that is, clear, simple and functional. The creativity process involve this another factor called NOVELTY. What is novelty? In the lecture notes, Novelty is the quality of being new. It goes to the roots of the problems where the problems are well defined and well researched. It has the originality value. I believe, novelty is a moral value in a creation or production that has this genuine quality. It maybe a creation or just an invention but as long as it is genuine, it has that novelty value. Look at the right side picture where we can see this man holding an umberella and this invention has been innovate to be multifunction. An umberella is not only to prevent oneselves from getting wet under the rain but the rain water are collected and being processed along the tube to become drinking water. Creative? Sure... Innovative? YES. No one has ever think to create something like this before. Thus, this creation has its own value. Genuine is not a decisive feature of creative work and novelty in creativity is always based on what has been created before.

An innovation are usually comes when a creation can be improved to be something better. People always want something new, something better. From that wants, innovation process were born. Some creation cant fulfill some needs and wants... that's where the innovation process takes place. Human's brain has many answers from many questions. And this is where this creative and innovative people creating or inventing a solution to all the questions.

The product of creativity, novelty and innovation process. Everything happens from a question and this question has the answers. That is why invention exists. Owh.. it was a mistake. I found out that I should draw or edit a creative picture of a friend. Not take his picture and uploaded it. hmmmm... so, i edit this picture of my friend and change it to be a novel cover. And when i look at this picture, i feel like i want to write a novel with this "selekeh" title.. haha :)

Reflection : Editing pictures is a very fun way to express what's going on inside your mind. I chose the novel atmosphere for this picture because i see this picture is very nostalgic and contains a lot of questions inside. It is very scenery and unique. So i change the whole reality into a novel cover.

"Yes, I can do this! It is just a chair, and curtains, and the color is gold.. urgh... how to make it gold? Erm... No matter what, I am gonna make it to be called A DRAWING.. *wink*"

There he goes, with his serious and focus expressions, he is experiencing a new experience in drawing with colors. I remember how hard he tried to finish this drawing and I know he did his best. He got talent, just need to be polished. Practice makes perfect bro~ :)

Title : Watcha Lookin At?

This weird face makes me laugh so hard. It supposed to be a candid picture but somehow it looks quite like a pose. He was so bored during this activity he had in this one camp and when people took a picture of his face, there he goes again... another different, weird, unrecognizeable kind of expression! It's such a mess but it is unique, interesting and genuine~ :)

Title : I Can See It!

There are many people already created this kind of scene when they are water tubing in the river. However, this picture are interesting because we can see how creative this guy which also a friend of mine posed his hands like a binocular instead of doing a "peace"! --> the usual symbol that people usually do when they dont know what to do with their hand when they are taking pictures <-- that's why this picture is chosen.

Title : The Boredom Smile

"To smile in a boredom is like creating a new entry to another exitement... I hope! and i am feeling cute... like a cat maybe?"

This is a nice image. The composition, the pose, the color arrangement, and the environments. Yes, it is fits. He is waiting for an exitement to come such as... "a food" and the waiting cause a boredom. And of course when we bored, we want to do something and we cant do something crazy such as... "jumping on a table" suddenly in a restaurant. Thus, a camera is a very nice medium to express this boredomness... haha. poor guy!~ :)

Part 1 : The breakthrough to the Creative & Creativity

The first class of the Creative Studies subjects has given an impact to my brain. Its an eye opener to the world of creativity. To be creative, we must think and focus but we can think using any part of our body... we can think using anything. Think outside of the box... think not just by using our brain but we can actually think using our heart, our nose, our ears, our eyes, our hands, our legs, and many more. Being creative means, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE..

Either you are a left brainer or a right brainer... its not possible to be creative as long as you can think something new and it is unique and has a value. Do some shift paradigm, and learn from your surroundings. THINK TO SOLVE the problems by using many ways. You can use mindmaps, researches, various type of problem solvings, its like using algebra, trigonometry, probability and simple calculations just to find the same answer. You can be creative ;)

After you understand what is being creative, you must understand what is creativity. How creative are you to understand creativity? Supposed creativity is a very subjective matters but unless you can show how unique and creative you are to your audience, nothing about your works contain creativity. It can be very simple and it can be very complicated... as long as people see it as creative and recognized it to be creative. Last but not least, some people are born with creativity and some not. But hey, creativity is about how you solve your problem through various ways and concepts and it is outside of the box. If you can think outside of the box, you are creative enough to solve the puzzle of how to be creative. You can manipulate a thing to become easier, than you are creative. There are many fields of creativity... creativity is not only in arts... it can be in business, managements, psychology, medic, architecture... so, ARE YOU CREATIVE?

Creativity is the key to be in the new world...
